SANDING

Significant savings with new motor specification

Our new motor specification: facts and figures

As an integrated solution provider, Steinemann is always looking for ways to adapt and optimize its sanding solutions to customer requirements. And we naturally aim to keep our all-in-one packages state-of-the-art in terms of technical standards. Above all, we aim to deliver top performance while utilizing resources as economically as possible. In particular, this means minimizing energy consumption – since this is the key to long-term savings.

To meet these needs, we have equipped our satos TSQ models with advanced electronics that, together with the Board Quality Cockpit (BQC), allow them to provide a broad spectrum of machine and process data. By collecting and analyzing these data, we can help you to achieve an even higher level of performance.

We observed and analyzed a series of installations over a period of several months. We found that the sanding motors only use 20–45% of capacity when working on particleboard (PB), MDF and HDF.

As a result of these findings, we decided to introduce a new motor specification – with a reduced power output – for machining these materials. As our customer, this change offers you a number of benefits.
  • Motors that are operated at more than 50% of their nominal power output achieve higher efficiency levels and therefore lower energy consumption.
  • If the overall power output of installed motors is lower, this also reduces:
    - The connected load
    - Reactive power
    - Required cable thickness/cable cross-sections
Power consumption savings are considerable, with less material (and therefore space) also being needed. And all of this is possible without compromising production output or sanding quality.

We looked at motors with an IE3 efficiency class rating. Today, sanding motors with a nominal output of more than 75 kW have to achieve the higher efficiency rating of IE4 in the European Union, Switzerland and Turkey. Although more expensive, these motors have an ROI of about 2.5 years, since their higher efficiency levels result in additional savings (see table).

Please note: In case of temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius / 113 Fahrenheit in the production hall, the use of the smaller motors must be checked.
